This report is produced to assess the modern wound care markets of Europe. Modern or advanced wound care was born some years ago with the advent of research indicating that chronic wounds will heal better and more quickly if treated in a moist, covered environment.

Hydrocolloids – The first to be developed of the modern dressings and still very much with a place in wound care management. Originally developed for wound care in the 1980’s following success within the Ostomy care field; there is still a large market for these types of dressing and they form a benchmark for modern wound care. More than 20 brands and their respective manufacturers are analysed.
Hydrogel Dressings – Ideally suited for dry wounds, since they are capable of absorbing water without dissolving. Hydrogels are capable of re-hydrating wounds and thereby promoting autolysis. There are again more than 20 brands on the European market from some 15 companies. |

Alginates – Derived from brown seaweed and used on a wide range of highly exuding wounds. Alginates can absorb up to 20 times their own weight in fluid and are usually available in rope and sheet form and typically are used to treat leg ulcers, cavity, sinuses and infected wounds. More than 20 brands analysed.
Film Dressings – Indicated for use on shallow wounds such as donor sites, minor burns, grazes and postoperative incisions. Semi permeable film dressings control and minimise the loss of moisture to the environment. Foams – Polyurethane or Silicone foams are widely used in Wound Care. Suitable for wounds with light to moderate levels of exudates and particularly useful for conforming to awkward areas of the body.
Protease Modulators – Fairly new class of products, aimed at modulating (toning down) protease activity within chronic wounds, which is known to have an adverse effect on wound healing. Modes of operation vary by product however the principal is to provide a dressing that will interact with the wound, modulate protease activity and thus promote healing. There are currently in excess of 15 brands of these product types available. |
